ABSTRACT
The present study analyzes the influence of family support on the professional development of athletes, focusing on its emotional, economic, and formative dimensions.
The objective was to determine how family involvement, expectations, and pressure impact athletes’ performance, motivation, and continuity in sports practice.
The research adopted a non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional design, using a structured questionnaire administered to athletes from various disciplines and age groups.
The data analysis revealed that the family constitutes the primary support system, acting as both an emotional and economic foundation throughout the athletic career. Results indicate that positive and balanced family support fosters resilience, self-confidence, and sustained engagement, while excessive expectations oriented toward immediate results can negatively affect performance and psychological well-being.
The findings highlight the importance of constructive family relationships that promote dialogue, autonomy, and enjoyment of sports as essential conditions for healthy and sustainable athletic development. This research emphasizes the family’s role not only as a resource provider but also as a formative agent that contributes to the athlete’s holistic growth and social integration.
